My First Garden

My First Garden

Posted on May 8, 2018

Since I was a kid, my father loved gardening. We used to have a huge garden in our backyard. All kind of vegetables and fruits. I was fascinated since every afternoon we had to go and pick them, and I still remember when we used to play around the garden and pick the fruit and eat them as is.

There is something that calls for serenity in the green leaf appearance, the earthy sense, and the scent of greens. I’ve always wanted to grow at least my salad ingredient in my garden as I had a big issue with cucumber weathering away in the fridge every time I visit the supermarket. Until I stopped eating cucumbers. I felt so bad throwing them away after few days.

So when we moved to the new house, and once we settled in, my close friend bought me all kind of seeds, and I had them stashed away for a while. When the time was right. I dusted off the box, laid down all the packets and decided to start small, lets go for cherry tomato and basil (my husband and I are obsessed with Basil). Task number one was YouTube, I watched every video that was ever made of growing tomato and basil in pots, I learned, I took notes and I was ready.

First trip was to Gardenia, got a large 70K best soil they have, which is already mixed with fertilizer. I went home and started filling small pots with the soil, watering it, adding seeds in pots.

Few days in, and I started seeing sprouts coming out, I was so excited, I took care of it and visited the pots 3 to 5 times a day (so much time in my hand since I quit) it was growing beautifully. I water them on schedule and fertilized them once a week.

I got more confident and started to plant more, cucumbers, lettuce, reddish, coriander, parsley, orange, lemon, flowers, everything that I could get my hands on, bought more soil, more pots, large and small ones.

I loved the time I spent caring for my small plants, it felt nourishing, calm, and rewarding for some reason. You feel a sense of accomplishment when you grow something from seed and see it growing in front of your eyes.

Month passed, I learned more and more and every time I stumble across something, I visit my friend google, my plants started growing and producing, and we made our first green salad, pasta with basil, pesto, no more of buying basil, coriander, and parsley as we were sufficient by what we are growing now.

I am still learning and extending my garden trying different things and loving it.

If you have the patience and space give it a go, it is so rewarding.

Here are few pictures of my pots until my garden beds are ready 🙂 and a new story will be born.
